There's a small hatch/cover opening in the center bottom of the hatch inner trim. Take off the cover. There's two sets of wires going to connectors on the latch mechanism. Remove the two connectors, and then see if the "hatch open" warning light goes out.

There are rubber bumpers built into the lid to make it tight when latched, if one has been messed with a bit the lid will wander up and down due to weight and car hitting bumps and the switch triggers thinking lid is open.
